Former Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan should be recognized as the ” main force” in the winning of Guyana’s independence, declared Sam Hinds, former Prime Minister of Guyana, at a recent commemorative luncheon in Toronto.

Hinds was the main speaker at the luncheon held to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of  Dr.Cheddi  Jagan who was President of Guyana from1992  to 1997. After his death, his wife, Janet, served as President from 1997 to 1999. She died in 2009.

Hinds also described Dr. Jagan and his wife as the” main force in the return of fair and free election” in Guyana in 1992.

In his address, Hinds spoke of the efforts made to preserve the history of Dr. Jagan through the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre (CJRC).

At the luncheon at the Elite banquet hall at which nearly 400 persons were present, tributes were paid to Dr. Jagan in brief messages as well as in poetry and song and funds were donated for the CJRC.
