Breana Stampfli
BREANA STAMPFLI ended all doubts as to who was the number one Under-14 player in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday with a straight sets demolition of Amanda Soo Ping Chow in the Girls final as the TATT 14 and Under Series concluded at the Eastern Regional Sports Complex, Tacarigua.
Stampfli, the defending champion, was expected to retain her title with ease and was hardly troubled throughout the tournament. Her success all but ensures she captures the Girls award for being the top player of the four-part series when the other legs are played.
The 2009 IBM ITF Under-14 winner got past Shania Millington 4-1, 4-0 in the semi-finals while Amanda defeated Kaeleigh De Silva 4-1, 4-1 in the other semi-final. Soo Ping Chow had not dropped a set prior to their meeting but was no match for Stampfli who dismantled her clinically. Stampfli won the first set 4-0 and dropped one game in the second to complete the rout and retain her title.
Meanwhile, a new winner was crowned in the Boys equivalent with Adrian De Silva ineligible to compete due to the age requirements. Eventual champion Adam Suite sent Tobago’s Jualon Greig packing in the “semis” with a straight sets win.
Greig, the 2009 IBM ITF Under-14 champion was the heavy favourite to take the title in the absence of last year’s winner De Silva. Greig was the losing finalist in the inaugural tournament and had been in good form leading up to the tournament, finishing second in the Men’s “B” division at the 2010 Public Courts Classified Championships.
He looked to be on course for another final appearance after taking the first set 1-4 but Suite stormed back to take the next two sets 4-1, 5-3 to book his place in the title match.
Joshua Abraham joined him in the final with a hard fought win against the Tennis TT “Rookie of the Year” Ross Hackshaw who had not lost a match or set prior to their encounter.
Hackshaw won the first set on tie-breaks but could not close out the match as Abraham took the next two 4-2, 5-3.
Abraham was at his brilliant best in the final, winning the opening set without dropping a game. Suite would give him a dose of his own medicine with a flawless 4-0 win to level the match in the second. It proved to be a double dose as he again hammered Abraham without losing a game.
The TATT Series resumes in May with the other competitions scheduled to be held in August and October at venues throughout TT.
